Health insurance when you’re pregnant

Pregnant and need health insurance?

BadgerCare Plus is state of Wisconsin Medicaid. It pays for the baby’s delivery and your health care while you’re pregnant. For the mom, this health insurance lasts 60 days after the baby is born.

What if I already have health insurance?

You may still qualify, but it depends on your household income. Check the chart below to see if you qualify.

You may qualify for BadgerCare Plus if:

  • You are pregnant

  • Your household’s monthly income is equal or lower than the amount on the chart.

  • Count each unborn baby in household size.

To get BadgerCare Plus:

After your baby is born:

Get BadgerCare Plus for your baby and then see if other family members qualify.

  1. Call 1-800-362-3002 and ask for your county agency phone number. Tell the county agency you just had a baby.

  2. Say you need BadgerCare Plus for the newborn and any other children in your household.

  3. Ask if the adults in your household will qualify.

To get BadgerCare Plus you can apply:

HealthCare.gov:

HealthCare.gov is the federal health insurance Marketplace.

  • If anyone in your family does not qualify for BadgerCare Plus, they might qualify for financial help from the Marketplace.

  • Sign up within 60 days of the baby’s birth or during Open Enrollment: November 1 - December 15

If you can’t get health insurance:

Go to a free clinic or community health center near you. To find a clinic near you, click here. Free clinics help people for free. Community Health Centers have financial help to lower the bill.
